Where can I go to get information about buying a property?

The Department of Commerce Consumer Protection office has detailed information about Buying and Selling a Home. This includes what you need to know when buying a property, how to get help and alternatives to buying. Information includes:

Where can I find an affordable housing option which suits me?

The Government of Western Australia’s Affordable Housing Portal allows users to discover affordable housing assistance options across the state depending on personal circumstance.

The Department of Housing 1300 761 885 have a Property Listing page which contains full ownership affordable housing options.

What home ownership assistance is available in WA?

First Home Owner Grant is a one-off grant payment to first home owners that satisfy eligibility criteria. As of 25 September 2013, first home owners purchasing or building a new home may be eligible to receive a grant up to $10,000. First home owners purchasing an established home may be eligible for a grant up to $3,000.

A household may be eligible for Stamp Duty Concession depending on the cost of the house or land, and whether they are a first home owner, or are eligible for another concessional rate of duty.

The Home Buyers Assistance Account is a West Australian grant of up to $2,000 for the incidental expenses of first home buyers when they purchase an established or partially built home through a licensed real estate agent for the purchase price of $400,000 or less.

A household may be eligible for Shared Home Ownership 1300 761 885 if they earn between $50,000 and $75,000 or less than $90,000 for couples/families, among other criteria. Through this scheme up to 30% of a mortgage can be shared with the State Government.

The Keystart 1300 578 278 ‘Low Deposit’ home loan is a variable interest rate loan which can be used by owner-occupiers to buy an established home or build a new house. It is available to both first and non-first home buyers and we lend across the State of Western Australia.

Indigenous Business Australia’s 1800 107 107 Indigenous Home Ownership program provides an affordable entry into home ownership for Indigenous Australians, particularly those on lower incomes, and first home buyers who have difficulty obtaining housing loan finance from mainstream commercial lenders. Keystart also have an Aboriginal Home Loan which can assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into home ownership.

What housing choices are available for over 55s?

The Seniors Housing Centre 1300 367 057 provides information on retirement villages, lifestyle villages, strata title, as well as home ownership and boarding and lodging. The Department of Centre also has a number of resources useful to seniors, including:

  • granny flats;
  • strata titles;
  • retirement villages;
  • residential parks and lifestyle villages;
  • renting;
  • boarding or lodging;
  • help to stay in your home;
  • aged care options;
  • accessing equity;
  • contractsand

What if I have a disability?

The Department of Housing offers a range of housing options to help people with disabilities access appropriate and affordable housing. This includes people with intellectual, physical, sensory or psychiatric impairment.

Options for people living with a disability include:

  • mainstream rental housing
  • home modifications to make housing more accessible
  • purpose-built rental accommodation;
  • home loans to purchase, build or modify private homes
  • community housing
  • bond assistance.

Access Home Loan Scheme is designed to help people with disabilities buy their own home or modify an existing private home to cater for their needs.
